Now was an early-ish start as I’m off to Adelaide. While I’m here I’m meeting a couple of places/people that are different and first in my list is Aberfoyle Park High School.
I had been welcomed to present to this Grade 8 math classes. That I thought HoloLens would if anything else could although I wasn’t sure what could provoke them.
It’s the presentation I have done where I had questions before I even started my mouth!
I began using the “boring stuff” — how I got into IT, what sorts of things I work on etc. and contained a couple of pics and also the technology I grew up using for a context.
Out of all of the images I revealed Donkey Kong got the largest response as it sounds a lot of Dad’s had one of those…which is not surprising because their daddy is most likely a similar age.
With the stuff it was time to bring something more fun out. The vibe from the room shifted from disinterest/distracted to electric!
David’s daughter needed a play with the HoloLens before the session and let me take a pic…
I had no shortage of volunteers to show off how the system works. The students played Dippy endlessly placing in shifting from female, to man to infants.
There were unlimited ooohhs, ahhhs and of course “Can I have the next turn?”
In that amongst all there were questions. Including what Dippy had been for. I was amazed that some of the students understood what there was a Diprotodon.
I was really impressed (but not surprised) at how quickly the students “got” the airtap and gaze. Most of them preferred the “C” method and immediately adapted to turning their waist rather than their head when they had their hand in front.
Due to those teachers that allowed me to take over their class might have had to get them to focus.
